Our Story

A neighborhood spot, built from decades at the stove.

Tartuca is the sum of a long career in restaurants, a few hard-won friendships, and a stretch of N Mississippi Avenue we are lucky to call home.

Tartuca is the sum of decades in the restaurant industry, coupled with connections to local food-growers, and friendships that turned into working partnerships. Every shelf built, menu created, and idea brought to life is a result of the pieces of shared knowledge we have gained from mentors throughout our careers.

We are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community and we intend to be your weekly neighborhood Italian spot — the kind of place where the bartender remembers your wine, the kitchen remembers your allergy, and the door is open at five sharp on the days we are open.

We thank you so much for your patronage, and are honored to serve you.

What we stand on

Four habits that make the room.

Nothing groundbreaking — just the slow, ordinary practices that add up to a meal worth coming back for.

01

From scratch

Made here, not opened here.

Pasta rolled in the kitchen. Focaccia pulled fresh. Sauces built from bones, peels, and time — the basics taken seriously.

02

Seasonal

What is fresh leads the menu.

Our menu is built from what is available and fresh via the season, inspired by the produce, flour, and cheeses produced in the Pacific Northwest.

03

Local farms

First-name growers.

Locally sourced, farm-fresh products from connections we have built one season at a time. The names on our invoices are people we know.

04

Old-world wines

A list worth lingering on.

Regional Italian bottles, chosen by people who actually drink them. Glasses pour generously; recommendations come without theatre.

Who we cook for

The Tuesday regular. The anniversary table. The walk-in at 5:02.

We built Tartuca as an intimate space for all — for neighbors who want a glass and a bowl of pasta on a weeknight, and for the people who drive across town for a long dinner with friends. The enclosed outdoor patio is open in season. The dining room stays warm year round.

Reservations are recommended, especially Friday and Saturday. Take-out by phone is available — please note not every menu item travels well, and our menu changes with the season.

"Deliciously unique but unpretentious elevated italian comfort food in a cozy setting with friendly staff. Great place for a romantic dinner or to show off Portland's charm to out of town guests."

"Exceptional plates of food and sincere diligent service. Love the open kitchen lay out. The bolognese, the meatballs and the parsnips with ricotta were some of our favs. Would highly recommend to anyone."

"Starting with the focaccia and burrata — the bread was incredibly fluffy inside and the outside was deliciously crispy. The pastas we shared were beyond exceptional. Every bite was so balanced and exciting."
